TEST PREP HELP
FOR THE ISEE

High school brings with it a lot of changes for students - demanding workloads, hectic schedules, balancing coursework and extracurricular activities, and busy social calendars are often typical of the average high schooler. Before they can enjoy the responsibilities of young adulthood, however, students must first determine and enroll in the high school of their choice.

Many families put a great deal of thought into selecting which high school their child will attend, as a top quality school can go a long way in terms of admittance into a leading college, and even in future career success. To truly stand out, students will have to perform well on high school entrance exams.

Many students across the country will be required to take a high school entrance exam known as the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Huntington Learning Center offers targeted ISEE tutoring to fully prepare students of all levels and abilities to perform well on the exam.

The Huntington Method to ISEE Tutoring

At Huntington, we understand that one of the most important indicators of success on the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is a student's confidence in his or her capabilities. We develop individualized ISEE exam prep programs that instill in students the skills and strategies they need to help them see that they truly possess the knowledge necessary to do well on this high school entrance exam.

We begin the tutoring process by first administering a full-length ISEE practice test to students entering grades 7-12, or an assessment of academic skills for students entering grades 5-6, in order to gauge each student's strengths and weaknesses, as well as his or her learning styles. We then design a fully customized ISEE prep plan that takes into account the areas of the ISEE in which your child needs special attention. Our tutoring programs incorporate important time management and organizational skill-building components so that, come test day, your child does not feel rushed or overwhelmed.

What to Expect on the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE)

The ISEE is an entrance exam that is taken by students between grades 2 and 12 who wish to enroll in private schools and non-Catholic religious schools throughout the United States. The test is made up of multiple choice questions divided across various sections, which include Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and Essay. Unlike most entrance exams, the ISEE is available in three levels: Upper, Middle, and Lower. The Upper level ISEE is given to students entering grades 9-12, the Middle level for those entering grades 7-8, and the Lower level for students entering grades 5-6.

The goal of the ISEE is to assess the success with which a student will perform academically within a given school, and it is a commonly used measure of academic capabilities apart from school records.

Common Questions
About the ISEE

The Primary 2 Level exam takes 53 minutes. The Primary 3 Level exam takes 54 minutes. The Primary 4 Level exam takes 1 hour. The Lower Level exam takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. The Middle and Upper Level exams each take 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Each school chooses their own test date. ISEE test dates, locations, and registration information can be found by visiting http://erblearn.org/parents/admission/isee/registration.

ISEE test dates may vary but students may register to take the ISEE once per the following testing periods:

  • Fall (August – November)
  • Winter (December – March)
  • Spring/Summer (April – July)

No points are deducted for incorrect or omitted answers. Speed of completion does not affect scoring for any section. The raw score is simply the total number of correct answers.

Raw scores are converted into scaled scores to account for differences in test difficulty across administrations. The ISEE is scored on a scale from 760 to 940. Scaled scores are determined using tables produced by the test maker. Scaled scores are then compared to a 3-year rolling average of scores from students of the same grade level nationally.

Program percentiles compare individual students to peers of the same age and grade who have taken the ISEE.

  • ISEE scores between the 50th and 74th percentiles are considered "barely above average."
  • ISEE scores at or above the 75th percentile are "very strong."

A student who normally scores above the 50th percentile on other standardized tests may score below the 50th percentile on the ISEE. Students who typically score above the 90th percentile can end up with barely above-average ISEE results. This reflects the highly competitive applicant pool taking the ISEE.

ISEE essays are not scored. They are forwarded to designated schools for individual review by admissions committees. The essays provide insight into the students' writing abilities.

ISEE score reports are released to the schools, consultants, and organizations specified during registration. Scores remain valid for one academic year. Admissions requirements vary by school - contact your preferred schools directly for details.
